Heart-wrenching and heart-warming   (2020-07-22)

This engaging story, though set 100-plus years ago, resonates with topics in today's headlines. Race relations, African American history, and the roots of systemic racism are explored from the perspective of two young girls. It interweaves lives over multiple generations to make the horror of slavery palpable, and the strength and dignity of generations of African Americans clear. The characters are lively and smart. The story is well-paced. An excellent choice for tweens on up.
